McMahon praises Tranmere Rovers' fighting spirit

TRANMERE Rovers' caretaker manager John McMahon praised his squad’s fighting spirit as they took three vital points against Shrewsbury Town.

The 2-1 win - with goals from Max Power and Junior Brown - moved Rovers into 19th position in League One.

The Prenton Park victory came against a tumultuous backdrop of off-pitch activity as the club fired manager Ronnie Moore last Wednesday for breach of contract.

But McMahon - who disclosed he has not yet been informed when, or if, a new manager will be appointed - said other recent changes at the club such as the appointment of new chief executive Jeremy Butler have had a positive effect.

And he was full of praise for the way the players have responded.

He said: “The squad’s fighting spirit and commitment is fantastic and the atmosphere is brilliant - all the ingredients you need.

“It was a good, open game on Saturday and we gave the fans something to shout about.

“I thought the supporters got fully behind the players and rallied them.

“We have some tough games coming up and we need to be ready for them.

“We’d like to think we are in good position, but will see where we are on the table after the Sheffield United game on Monday.”

This Tuesday evening, Rovers will be away to Crawley Town, who are three points and four places ahead of them in the table.

On Good Friday they are again on their travels to Gillingham, and will face Sheffield United at Prenton Park on Bank Holiday Monday.

After that, there will be only two games remaining. Tranmere will be away to Leyton Orient on April 26 and their last match of the season will be played at Prenton Park against Bradford, on Saturday, May 3.
