TRANMERE Rovers chairman Peter Johnson says he thinks he has found the right person to become the new owner of the club.

Mr Johnson says he expects to be able to make an announcement within a couple of weeks and that he is "quite confident" a deal will be completed.

He said: "It's very important we find the right people.

"I've had to find someone who loves the club and the fans can trust and I think I've done that now.

"We expect to make an announcement fairly soon, within a couple of weeks I would think.

"They're a bit younger than I am, they've got the money and I'm satisfied the fans will be able to trust them."

The club up for sale since 2002.

Tranmere Rovers Supporters' Trust recently staged a public fundraising campaign to try to raise cash for a takeover, but failed to hit their £250,000 target.

Mr Johnson said he expected the deal to go through "in about two weeks" but nothing was yet certain.

The club's assistant manager John McMahon said news of a new owner will end a period of uncertainty.

During a press conference at Prenton Park on Monday, he said: "It's good that something seems finally to be happening, because there's been a lot of uncertainty around here.

"It's difficult to keep up with the rumours that are going around.

"People speculate and make assumptions on who's to take over, when they're going to take over, how they're going to take over.

"Fingers crossed it will perhaps help settle people down. A change of owner will also lift morale of fans.

"But until the deal's been signed and sealed, we'll wait and see what the targets are.”
