Wirral Sunday League: Bee Hive buzzing after first win of season
2:11pm Monday 25th February 2013 in Sport By Ernie McDonald
EVERYHING comes to him who waits, they say.
Bee Hive's supporters were all abuzz on Sunday after their side recorded its first victory of the season, and escaped from bottom spot in the Wirral Sunday League's Second Division.
More satisfying, was that the 3-2 victory was at the expense of current runaway leaders, Lever Bushell Ath.
Steve Davies bagged both goals for the hosts, but it was Bee Hive who went home the happier, thanks to a sparkling double from Sean Bagley and a wickedly deflected effort from Tony Kay.
That result enabled the rival challengers to take advantage, and the next four clubs all won, but despite LBA's second defeat of the season, the leaders stayed eight points clear of the chasing pack.
Nearest rivals, Champions Bar, scraped a narrow 3-2 result over battling Halfway House, with Callum Morgan, Jamie Rainford and Paul McWillliam on the mark.
Hayden Metcalf and Johnny Cable scored Halfway's consolations. Unbeaten third placed Higher Bebington RBL, were too good on the day for Wirral Ath.,and celebrated a 4-0 result, with efforts from Dave Baker, Lee Dunn, James McIvor and James Felton.
Stuey Hardman helped himself to a hat trick, and was joined on the score sheet by Chris Ballard and Darren Graham, as Bebington cranked up their challenge, with a 5-0 rout of Port Sunlight, and Bromborough won 2-1 against Gladstone Ath. Mark Bentley and Johnny Raynor found the net for the winners.
Sunday's Division One action produced another shock result, after Ravenscroft took the wind out of Windmill's sails.
The second-placed challengers paid the price, after Rob Abelwhite(2), Andy McIvor and Chris Hugo took their chances in a 4-1 triumph.
Leaders, Shore Villa, made it nine wins from as many starts, after they won 4-0 at Eagle & Crown, with efforts from Mike Neish, Stuey Green, Gaz Johnston and Steve Morgan. Riverside went level on points with Windmill, when Gary Clarke (2) Danny Russell and Johnny Rathmill netted in the 4-1 win at Astra Ath.
It was celebration time for Sheridans, who won 6-1 at Bronze. Carl Owens, Ben Percival and Conker Rowlands were among the scorers for Sherries.
Elsewhere, a goal from Gary Windass helped Gallaghers to a 1-1 finish with Student Sixes.
Premier division leaders, Neston Nomads, were on fire against nearest rivals, Towers, and posted an impressive 7-1 result, highlighted by a Richie Foulkes hat trick.
Further goals from Paul Ellison, Dean Jones, Lee Cairns and Jay Thompson completed the winners' tally, and that victory left Nomads needing six points from their remaining four games to retain the title.
Second-placed Tixall Prenton upped the ante in the chase for the runners-up medals, after a Steve Rutter double and an in swinging corner from Gary Parr secured a 3-2 win over Amazon Management, who hit back via two goal Danny Smith.
Kent FC won by the same scoreline against Victoria Seniors, with Steve English, Callum Allcock and Daniel Morley on target.
Bottom club Clarence gave it their all, but were undone by a solitary effort from MSC Eastham's Jerry Canady.
The Wirral Sunday League has a limited number of vacancies for next season. Application forms can be obtained from the League Secretary, Dave Lea (Tel. 0151 608 4332).
