Houlihan’s Birkenhead Sunday League: Cup victory for Beechwood Youth

IT was Cup weekend in the League this week and Beechwood Youth took the headlines with an excellent 2-1 victory over Chester in the fifth-round of the Cheshire U17 County Cup.
Goals from Martin Wooley and Dominic Swift secured a Semi-Final tie against West Kirby Wasps.
In the Tony Houlihan’s Memorial Challenge Cup, two goals from John Cassidy and one from Dave Lee saw Brow through 3-1 against Churchwood (Ben Kearney).
In the Veronica Conway Cup, Dock (Kenyon 2, Head, Craven, Hughes, Noakes, Byrne) won 7-1 at Argyll (Ithell) and Rock Ferry Social (Stewart, S. Jones) went through 2-1 against Heygarth (Evans).
The President's Cup saw a late winner for Prenton Dell (Edwards, Bolton) as they defeated King’s Arms (Machin) 2-1 and in the Tony Smith Cup, Shaftesbury 'B' (Swindell 2, Verdin, Lawler) beat Farmers Arms Moreton (Broadbent) 4-1.
Armchair Alliance (Marrs 2, Bishop) needed extra-time to see off Shawcross (Brennan) 3-1 in the Rocky’s Gym Cup and Allport Athletic (Forshaw, Reid, Ryan, Williams) were convincing 4-0 winners over Beechwood Falcons.
Vauxhall Colts (McLean 2, Lang, Caswell) knocked AC Hoylake out of the Cleveland Cup with a 4-3 success.
David Tacy Cup action saw Steve Corris hit a hat-trick for Lancelyn Glenavon (D. Corris, A. Jones 2, Beattie) as they won 7-2 at Old Parkonians and Shaftesbury 'A' also hit seven as they beat Wirral Spartans (Woods) 7-1.
Steve Dutton hit a hat-trick of penalties as Lions FC (Pulham, Mortin) went through 5-2 at FC Ridger and Birkenhead Youth ‘B’ (Fleckner 2, Dillon, A Povall) won 4-1 at FC Ridger Athletic.
Riley's (Lines, McGregor, Noonan, Edwards) knocked out FC Ellies (Herbert, Cass, Cowl) 4-3, Millcroft (Williams 2, Richards, Fitzpatrick) beat Merebrook (Garner, Philips) 4-2 and FC Vaults (Ratcliff 2, Geddes) scored a late winner against Rangers Breaks (Roberts, Cefai) to win 3-2.
League action saw Queens Park (Burke 2, Courtenay, Jackson, C. Bowe) continue their relentless march towards another Premier Division Title, with a 5-0 result over Stirrup Sports & Social.
In the only other game in the top Division, Dava Byrne scored twice for Upton Villa as they defeated Shore Villa (Thompson) 2-1.
In Division One, Arrowe Park (Cavanagh, Newton) drew 2-2 with Saddle Club (Hodson, Morgan) and in Division Three, Liam Rose scored five times for Victoria Lodge (Newman 2, Davies) as they beat Woodward (B. New) 8-1, to go top of the table.
In the Youth Division, Vauxhall Youth (Lewin, Cookson, Tollitt, Desmond, Nield) won 5-3 against Glenavon Colts (Brooks, Wood, O’Keefe) and Ashville Colts (Fleming 2, Lady, Sutton) won 4-3 at Glenavon Youth.
