IT was another struggle to get weekend cricket matches under way after an attrociously wet Friday.

Groundsmen have faced an uphill task all season but much hard work has born some fruit for local enthusiasts.

Leaders Wallasey may wish the weather had intervened on Saturday as they suffered defeat at home to Wigan in Division One of the Bridging Finance Solutions Liverpool Competition. Liam Crilly with 6-42 restricted Wigan to 150 but then Wallasey were all out 101. Wigan’s Mark Shorrocks recorded a hat-trick in his 5-52 return. Graham Reid with 43 top scored for the losers.

New Brighton in the Premier Division drew away to Maghull who closed 26 runs behind with four wickets standing. John While contributed 69 for the seasiders.

Lowly Caldy surprised high-riding Parkfield Liscard in a Division Two derby.

The Paton Field outfit registered 199-6 and then put the combined side out for 119. Jacob Crow 66, Andy Potter 58 and James Ashcroft 4-40 were best for Caldy. Gary Ratcliff top scored with 32 for Parkfield Liscard and Matt Keogh returned 3-40.

Birkenhead Park did not have a game but Birkenhead St Mary’s played and won for the second week running, this time by 80 runs against Sutton.

Muhammed Ghafoor was unlucky to be caught out one short of his century and followed up with a 3-19 return.

Neston enjoyed a 16 runs victory at Urmston in the Premier Division of the Chapel Press Cheshire County League. Luke Camden with 56 helped Neston post 121 after they were put in to bat. John Crick with 5-26 starred as the home side were dismissed for 105.

Oxton made it by four wickets with one ball to spare at Didsbury in a match reduced to 50 overs a side. Lou Vincent 77 and Simon Stokes 59 were well to the fore.

Irby in Division One lost by five wickets at Cheadle where Alex Hughes scored 64.

Upton in Division Two saw off Malpas by six wickets in a game cut to 40 overs a side after a delayed start. Jared Van Heerden struck an unbeaten half century and Darren Warburton scored 46.

Parkonians lost by 56 runs at Wistaston Village in Division One of the Cheshire Alliance. Dave Fletcher 5-55 and Chris Beckett 4-54 bowled well.

Port Sunlight in Division Three accounted for Wistaston Village II by four wickets.

Eastham Bromborough enjoyed a 76 runs margin against Kerridge. Mark Griffiths top scored with 67 and Mike Hooks made 43.

The successful bowlers were Russ Williams 3-4 and Ian Corner jnr 3-20.

Tranmere Vics went under by four wickets at Rostherne where Mark O’Brian hit 48 and Ed Briers returned 3-33.
