Alan triumphs in first individual tourney of the season

IT has been a tremendously busy week on the Wirral bowling scene . . .

Last Saturday saw the final stages of the first individual event.

Tixall's Alan Popham beat Gladstone's Nigel Hughes 21-18 in the final.

Alan played some outstanding bowls throughout the tournament and thoroughly deserved his victory.

The final stages of the first team event - the Wallasey League Five-a-side Competition - was also played and, yet again, the result might be considered to be a little surprising.

Sacred Heart proved too strong on the night for the highly-fancied West Kirby Vics squad and beat them 101-90 in the semi-final.

Sacred Heart went on to face Queens Royal in the final and triumphed 100-83, with all their players producing excellent diplays.

On Sunday, last year's Wallasey League champions, West Kirby Vics, travelled to Shrewsbury to take part in the British CGBA annual Club Championship.

After winning their first two matches, they came up against a powerful Brighouse team in the semi-final - and lost by 12 shots.

The week has also seen a full programe of club matches, the results of which appear on the left of this page.

q Starting on May 3, the Cammell Laird and Arno bowling clubs will be running coaching sessions for junior players at the Cammell Laird Club, St Peter's Road, Rock Ferry, from 10am-12noon.

This is open to any Junior and there are no age restrictions. Players will have an opportunity to be selected to enter the British Parks Merit in June and a national 10-a-side tournament in July.

Contact John or Mo Evans on 643-8779 or just turn up on the Saturday morning.

q A last reminder that there is a Race Night at the Sacred Heart Parish Centre, Moreton, on Friday (May 2).

This is being run in aid of Wallasey CGBA. First race is at 8.30pm.

What competition did Alan win? Where was it? Who else was in it?
