WHEN John Jones, who plays for the Baileys Hill Club in North Wales, reached the final of this week's Winter Flyers it looked as though yet again the main prize might leave Wirral.

However, the Lever Club's Dougie Briscoe had other ideas and he capped a very good morning's play with an excellent performance to surprise the more experienced Welsh player.

Jones had had a difficult route to the final and was made to work hard to get there.

He just got the better of Chris Barton and then in the quarter-final he came from behind to disappoint West Kirby Victoria's Bill Atkinson.

In the semi-final he beat a player who had also reached this stage last week, Upton Victory Hall's John Cosgrove.

On his way to the final, Briscoe had had two fairly straightforward wins, firstly over Joe Edwards in the quarters and then Port Sunlight Village and Works' Jim Mannion in the semi-final.

And in the final he continued with the same high level of play in a surprisingly one sided match winning by the relatively comfortable score of 21-10.

This was Briscoe's first win at the Flyers but if he can maintain this standard he will be a danger to anyone in the weeks to come.
