ALTHOUGH this series of bowls Flyers started on a very soggy morning in Birkenhead Park, the large turn out showed the enthusiasm for the game of this hardy bunch of bowlers.

This week the event was won by Paul Roberts who plays for the Baileys Hill Club in North Wales.

In the final he beat one of the real stalwarts of the game John Hignett Snr who each week comes over from Liverpool where he plays for Walton Park.

In the quarter finals Roberts had to come from behind against Eddie Dutton to just squeak through by the smallest of margins, 21-20 and he then defeated the winner of last year's final tournament John Hignett Jnr in the semi-final.

Meanwhile at the quarter final stage Hignett Snr beat a player making his first visit to the flyers Norman Feely before having a really tremendous win against Tixall's Jamie Fitzpatrick.

Though Hignett did all he could in the final he was not able to prevent Roberts taking the top prize back to Wales.

Results: Quarter-finals: J Hignett Jnr 21; C. Portis 17; P Roberts 21, E Dutton 20; J Fitzpatrick 21, C Barton 14; J Hignett Snr 21, N Feely 12.
