The Carlsberg-Tetley Tixall Classic played on Spring Bank Holiday Monday attracted a very strong field and at the end of a long day, local bowler, Gladstone’s Ian Hazlehurst, continued his fine run of form and took the first prize beating teammate Jon Finch in the final.
Hazlehurst got the better of another in-form player Chris Barton in his semi final while Finch beat last year’s winner Robbie Hall in the other semi.
Results: Quarter finals: C Barton (Quarry Vikings) 21, J Hambleton (Macclesfield) 17; I Hazlehurst Gladstone) 21, C Griffiths (Wrexham) 20; J Finch (Gladstone) 21, C Jenkins (Alsager) 18; R Hall (Tixall) 21, N Hughes (Gladstone) 09.
Semi finals: Hazlehurst 21, Barton 16; Finch 21, Hall 18.
Final: Hazlehurst 21, Finch 12.
On Friday, West Kirby Victoria’s Bill Atkinson went over to the Farmers Arms in Liverpool and won the local qualifying round of the Jack and Jean Isherwood Veterans Championship. He will now go on to represent Mersyside in the finals to be played in Shropshire in July.
The junior coaching sessions at Cammell Laird’s are now in full swing and last week saw the annual “Young ‘uns and Old ‘uns” tournament.
This was won by the pairing of Joe O’Brian and Andrew McAsey who beat Steve Crighton and Joe Sanderland in the final.
The Wirral Junior Merit Tournament will be taking place on Saturday, June 20, at Cammell Laird, 11am for 11.30am. This is open to all junior players aged 18 years and under. The annual George Gilmore Charity Match was played at Manor Road on Sunday, and raised more than £500 pounds for Cancer Research at Clatterbridge.
The match itself was won by the Wallasey Parks’ away team, who just pipped their colleagues, the Wallasey home team, after an excellent afternoon’s bowling.
In the North Wirral League Pairs matches played last week, the results were: Cheshire Cheese beat Poulton; Grange beat Moreton RBL; Manor Road ‘C’ beat Great Float and Liscard beat Upton Victory Hall.
The Cheshire Cheese pair of Brian Kenyon and Sylvia Jones, with a 21-04 win, had the best result of the day.
After the first few matches Sacred Heart top of the league having won all their games.
