Bowls: Wallasey Parks Merit Finals at New Brighton Cricket Club

The Wallasey Parks Merit Finals were played on Sunday on the excellent green at New Brighton Cricket Club and Queens Royal’s Chris Barton showed his liking for this green when he took his second title on it in two weeks.

Following his win in the recent New Brighton Classic he played very well throughout this tournament and he beat West Kirby Victoria’s Jamie Fitzpatrick in the final. Despite the weather there was a good turnout and plenty of really close and exciting matches.

Results: Quarter Finals: J. Fitzpatrick 21, W. Astles 11; M. Gilmore 21, A. Thompson 20; C. Barton 21, D. Gilmore 11; C. Saville 21, W. Atkinson 17. Semi Finals: Fitzpatrick 21, Gilmore 10; Barton 21, Saville 13. Final: Barton 21, Fitzpatrick 08.

The four players involved in the semi finals will now go on to represent Wallasey in the British Parks Senior Championships later in the year.

Also on Sunday the Birkenhead and District team played in their first match in the 2 nd Division of the British Parks CGBA Senior County Championship. Despite winning the home match 219-202 against North Derbyshire they unfortunately lost away 242-197 and this meant that they lost overall. There is still everything to play for in the remaining matches though.

Last week several local players travelled to East Yorkshire to take part in the prestigious Bridlington Merit Tournament and West Kirby Victoria’s Robbie Fitzpatrick and Gladstone’s Ian Hazlehurst made it a memorable double for Wirral. Robbie won the main event, beating Paul Chamberlain from the East Midlands 21-17, and Ian won the consolation event.

This year the ever popular Magazine Charity Pairs Tournament will be taking place on Saturday June 13th. This year the charity benefiting will be Claire House. The Tournament is open to all pairs and anybody wanting to enter should contact Sam Robinson on 638 0394. This year the event is being restricted to the first 64 entries.

After the first few games in the Bebington and District League Tixall and Ledsham Royal are setting the pace at the top of the ‘A’ Division with both teams winning all their matches so far. In the ‘B’ Division the early leaders are Cheshire Cheese and Lever Club ‘B’ and in the ‘C’ Division Pensby ‘B’ and Thingwall ‘B’ lead the way.

In the Wallasey League Queens Royal head the first Division with Manor Road in second place and last year’s winners West Kirby Victoria lying third having played one game less. It is very close in the second Division with current leaders Grange only just above 4 other teams while in the third Division the leaders are Manor Road ‘C’ and Royden Hall.
