Bill Atkinson clinches the top spot at Pensby Bowling Club in the Wirral and District CBGA Mayor's Handicap

Saturday night saw the final stages of the Wirral and District CGBA Mayor's Handicap Tournament played on the excellent Pensby Bowling Club green.

West Kirby Victoria's Bill Atkinson put his run of second place finishes behind him and he clinched victory with a win over Kings 2000 Mark Myles in the final.

Atkinson beat last year's winner, Roy Popham, in his first round match. At Pensby he had to overcome strong opposition in the shape of two Gladstone Libs. players, Darren Hankin and Craig Saville to reach the final. Meanwhile Myles had proved too strong for Bebington Park's Eric Bell and he then had a very good win against three times winner Gladstone's Nick Burridge.

The final was an excellent game but Atkinson held on to win 21-16.

Results: Quarter finals: N. Burridge 21, G. Riley 06; M Myles 21, E. Bell 16; C. Saville 21, I. Hazlehurst 16; W. Atkinson 21, D. Hankin 15. Semi finals: Myles 21, Burridge 14; Atkinson 21, Saville 10. Final: Atkinson 21, Myles 16.

On Thursday there was a Challenge match between the Wirral Ladies CBA and the Wallasey (Mens) CGBA with each team consisting of twelve pairs of players. This took place at Royden's green and, despite the awful weather, proved to be an excellent night of bowls.

The Ladies won four of the first five games and initially took what appeared to be a commanding lead but slowly the men began to fight back and when Mathew Gilmore and Frank O'Neil won the final game 21-15 the men had won the match by just one shot, 215 to 214.

Obviously the match could have gone either way and hopefully the success of the night, which was enjoyed by all the players, will ensure that this becomes an annual event.

On Sunday 26th April the Wirral ladies CGA play their first game against North Warickshire in Coventry.

There is a coach leaving Pensby Bowling Club at 10.30am and anyone one who would like to accompany the team are very welcome to join them. The cost will be £5.00 and anyone interested in going should get in touch with Val Bolton on 608 5540.
