HAWKSBURY'S Paul Roberts was only making his fourth visit to this session of the Winter Flyers but right from the off he seemed determined to make sure his journey over from North Wales was worthwhile.

He had a really difficult series of games but he came through each of them to face Gladstone’s John Hignett Jnr in the quarter-finals.

It was a great game and Hignett, who was making his first appearance of the year, did all he could but Roberts just scraped through to meet Hoylake Central’s Tommy Walker in the semis.

Roberts found this a little easier and he went through to face Tixall's Dave Gilmore in the final.

Gilmore had had two 21-16 wins to reach the final, firstly over Upton Victory Hall's Tony Ratclife and then another Hawksbury player, John Jones.

Gilmore did all he could in the final but he could not prevent Roberts from recording a well-deserved second win of this series of tournaments.
