IN the final of the Dr Dawson Victory Cup on Saturday, Tixall overcame a 24-shot handicap to record an emphatic victory over Birkenhead first division rivals Heswall RBL.

In the match played, as usual, on the Oxton Conservative Club green, Tixall had 10 winners with Nigel Hughes and Anthony O'Neill both recording 21-02 victories.

For Heswall, John Lloyd and Ian Johnson both won but it was not nearly enough to prevent Tixall taking a 240-165 win to regain the cup they held in both 2013 and 2014.

The Wallasey Association’s Festival Tournament was played on Sunday in Central Park.

The winner after a good day's bowling was Great Float's Derek Smith, who beat Bronze's Billy Higgenson in a superb final match.

Smith had a great win over New Brighton Queens Royal’s Paul Saville in the quarters and he followed this up with a very impressive result against Hoylake Central's Tommy Walker.

Higgenson reached the final with two good wins over Manor Road's Alan Gaynor and Bronze's Elliot Potter.

The final could have gone either way but Smith just scraped it by the closest of margins.

Results:

Quarter-finals: E Potter (Bronze) 21, Mo Saville (Sandridge) 17; W Higgenson (Bronze) 21, A Gaynor (Manor Road) 17; T Walker (Hoylake Central) 21, R Hodgson (Upton Victory Hall) 20; D Smith (Great Float) 21, P Saville (New Brighton Queens Royal) 14.

Semi-finals: Higgenson 21, Potter 17; Smith 21, Walker 06.

Final: Smith 21, Higgenson 20.

The number of entries for the Wallasey Junior Tournament, which was played at the same time also in Central Park on Sunday, was very disappointing but nonetheless the players involved displayed a very high standard of play and the winner, Kieron Kearney of New Brighton Quarry Vikings, really deserved his victory.

There is a busy schedule of bowls being played this weekend.

On Friday, August 19, the Federation Veterans Individual Merit Tournament is taking place in Wallasey on the greens at New Brighton Cricket and Bowls Club.
