THERE was a big turnout for the Flyer's Tournament on Sunday and Tixall's Jamie Fitzpatrick did really well to come through a series of difficult matches to take the first prize.

In the quarter finals Fitzpatrick beat last week's finalist, John Roberts of Levers, and he then had another close game against Tixall's Dave Gilmore.

Meanwhile Gladstone's Ray Lynch beat last week's winner Mick Andrews in the quarters and then Upton Victory Hall's Tony Cavanagh.

Fitzpatrick established a good lead in the final until Lynch made a spirited comeback and it was a relieved Fitzpatrick who finally edged through to a win and stop Lynch from taking his second win of this series.

Results:

Quarter Finals: J. Fitzpatrick 21, J. Roberts 17; D. Gilmore 21, K. Howgate 11; R. Lynch 21, M. Andrews 18; T. Cavanagh 21, O. Turner 16.

Semi Finals: Fitzpatrick 21, Gilmore 16; Lynch 21, Cavanagh 17. Final: Fitzpatrick 21, Lynch 17.

The final game in the Birkenhead and Wirral Afternoon Section's league's season saw the top two teams in the first division, Higher Tranmere Vets and Heswall RBL, playing last Wednesday to determine who would be the 2015 champions.

The two teams were tied on an equal number of points and with Higher Tranmere having the home advantage they would probably have been considered to be favourites to retain the title they won last year.

However the Heswall first four gave their team a tremendous start by winning all their games and though Tranmere fought back to take two of the middle four games it was not enough and somewhat against the odds Heswall became the Champions for the 2016 season.

The game was played in a great spirit throughout and thoroughly entertained the large crowd who turned up to watch.

The winners of the other divisions were division two, Albany who return back to the first tier. Division 3, Navel Vets. Division 4, Wallasey RBL and Division 5, Upton Victory Hall 'B'.

The final stages of the Richard Evans Memorial 31up Tournament took place last Friday at Cammell Lairds.

A good crowd saw Halewood's Dave Carter win the trophy for the second time beating Gladstone's John Finch in the final.

Carter clearly enjoys this green as he has been in the final three years running.

He was in dominant form in the semis beating Tixall's Robbie Fitzpatrick while Finch just edged through against his team mate at Gladstone, Jamie Smith.

The final was very tight throughout but Carter held his nerve to take a 31-27 win.

Results:

Quarter finals: J. Smith 31, M. Davies 20; J. Finch 31, M. Gilmore 28; R. Fitzpatrick 31, N. Burridge 13; D. Carter 31, R. Lynch 16.

Semi Finals: Finch 31, Smith 24; Carter 31, Fitzpatrick 14. Final: Carter 31, Finch 27.

Correction. Two weeks ago it was reported that Tixall 'B' won the Bebington Pairs second division. The winners were actually Parkfield.
