THE second round of the Winter Flyers was again played in fine conditions in Birkenhead Park on Sunday.

Last week, New Brighton Quarry Viking's John Harrison fell to the eventual winner in the quarter finals but this week he made no mistake and despite having two very tight qualifying games he came through to win this week’s final against Lever's Colin Portis.

He won both his quarter-final and semi-final games by the closest of margins, 21-20, against Mick Andrews and then Anthony O’Neil, who both play for Tixalls.

Portis beat Ritchie Marshall in the quarter final before getting the better of Kevin Howgate in the semis. Harrison then had a fairly straightforward 21-11 win in the final.

Results:

Quarter-finals: C Portis 21, R Marshall 10; K Howgate 21, J Edwards 13; J Harrison 21, M Andrews 20; A O’Neill 21, P McGhee 17.

Semi-finals: Portis 21, Howgate 13; Harrison 21, O’Neill 20.

Final: Harrison 21, Portis 11.

Several Wallasey Association players had qualified to play in the Federation Individual Merit Competition at Halifax Bowling Club on Sunday.

Manor Road’s Dave Gilmore was the most successful Wallasey player, and almost made it to the final, just losing 21-20 in the semis.
