THE Federation Team Knockout Tournament was held last Sunday, September 13, at Owley Wood in Cheshire.

The Wallasey Association were entering a team in this event for the first time and at the end of the day the Wallasey team had swept all before them to take the title.

They totally dominated both their first matches, winning by more than 50 points, a huge margin in an eight-man format.

They then came up against the winners from 2014, Rochdale, in the semi-final and although this was a little harder the Wallasey team still won by 16 points.

In the final they faced old enemies Colne Valley and won by 11 shots. All the team played their part in what was a great performance and it bodes well for the future.

It was great to see a good turnout in the first session of the ‘Winter’ Flyers Tournaments in Birkenhead Park on Sunday.

Gladstone’s Ray Lynch made a winning start to put himself at the top of the points table, beating Eddie Dutton of New Brighton QuarryVikings in a close final.

Lynch also had a hard match in the quarter-finals, only just pipping another Quarry Viking player, John Harrison, and then he beat his team-mate at Gladstone, Jamie Smith, in the semis.

Dutton had beaten Frank Leech of Cammell Laird in his quarter-final game before he had a great win over the top performer at these tournaments, Tixall’s Mick Andrews.

The final was close but Lynch took a well deserved victory.

Results: Quarter-finals: M Andrews 21, T Walker 13; E Dutton 21, F Leech 16; R Lynch 21, J Harrison 19; J Smith 21, J Roberts 12.

Semi-finals: Dutton 21, Andrews 17; Lynch 21, Smith 15.

Final: Lynch 21, Dutton 19.

There are still a few games to play in the Birkenhead and Wirral Afternoon Section and at the moment the top of the first division could not be much closer. Last year’s champions, Higher Tranmere Vets currently have a three-point lead over Heswall RBL and with the two teams meeting in the last game of the season at Tranmere it could go either way.

In the second division Albany are favourites to finish above Thingwall which would mean both teams returning to the first division. In the third division Navel Vets lead from Harrison Park ‘B’ and Port Sunlight Village and Works, while in divisions four and five Wallasey RBL and Upton Victory Hall ‘B’ both have a comfortable lead.
