THE first Winter Flyers Tournament of 2015 in Birkenhead Park certainly lived up to its name; it was very cold and frosty but there was still a good turn out of hardy bowlers.

The final was between two players who both play for the Lever Club, the brothers John Roberts and Joe Edwards and at the end of an excellent game it was the still improving Edwards who took his second win at these tournaments.

In his quarter final game Edwards proved too good for West Kirby's Bill Atkinson and then he had an excellent win over the beaten finalist in the Christmas Tournament, Gladstone's Ray Lynch.

Edwards took a big lead but in the end he had to hold his nerve as Lynch fought back. Roberts was in tremendous form as he won through the early rounds and he had a great win over Tixall's Nigel Hughes in the quarters.

He then totally dominated in his semi-final against Doug Briscoe who now plays for the Whittingham Club in North Wales.

In the final Edwards continued to play at a very high level and as hard as Roberts tried he could not deny him a well deserved victory.
