THERE was very good turn out of players in Birkenhead Park on Sunday for this week's Flyers Tournament.

The weather was very pleasant and greens were running well. After a great final the winner was Gladstone's Ray Lynch who beat Matt Gilmore of Tixall.

Lynch had beaten Ritchie Marshall in the quarters before having a very good win in the semi final over the run-away leader in the points table, Tixall's Mick Andrews.

Gilmore had been a little too good for Bob Hodgson who plays for Upton Victory Hall before he overcame his team mate at Tixalls, Jamie Fitzpatrick, in the semis.

Lynch was in his third final of this series of tournaments. He was clearly determined to put aside the disappointment of losing on both the previous occasions and he held his nerve to beat the in form Gilmore.

Results:

Quarter Finals: M. Gilmore 21, R. Hodgson 13; J. Fitzpatrick 21, J. Cosgrove 09; R. Lynch 21, R. Marshall 14; M. Andrews 21, G. Marshall 10.

Semi Finals: Gilmore 21, Fitzpatrick 17; Lynch 21, Andrews 12. Final: Lynch 21, Gilmore 19.

After seven meetings of this session of the Flyers Mick Andrews has 47 points, Ray Lynch 33 points with Matt Gilmore on 19 points.

Following them are Joe Edwards and Nick Woodward who both have 17 points.

It is very sad to have to report the passing of another of the great stalwarts of the game.

Bill Cheeseman played for Stork and then the Albany Club.

He was a very good player and a great club man. Our sympathies are with his family and friends.

For those wishing to pay their respects to Bill the funeral will be at Landican on Thursday, November 13 at 11.30am.

The Wirral and District AGM takes place on Monday, November 10 at the Lever Club in Greendale Road, Port Sunlight, starting at 7.30pm.
