THE finals of the MachFab Open Pairs Tournament were played on the green at Royden Hall on Saturday.

The winners of the event after a thrilling final match were the pairing of two local players, Tixall's Robbie Hall and Heswall's Dave McDermott.

They won the final 21-19 beating Steve Curbishley of Delamere and Lewis Scott who plays for St. Asaph.

To reach the final Hall and McDermott had to come through against two bowlers well known on the Wirral, Mike Tunstall from Liverpool and Alan Hill who now plays in Lancashire, while Curbishley and Scott had beaten the Lloyd's pairing of Ben and Dave Phillips.

Semi Finals: Curbishley and Scott 21, Phillips and Phillips 17; Hall and McDermott 21, Tunstall and Hill 16. Final: Hall and McDermott 21, Curbishley and Scott 19.

On Sunday in Birkenhead Park the Winter Flyers Tournament was won by Lever's Colin Portis who beat Gladstone's Ray Lynch by the closest of margins in a really close and exciting final.

To reach the final Portis had had another close game against the consistent Joe Edwards who also represents the Lever Club and he then beat New Brighton Queens Royal's Eddie Dutton.

Meanwhile Lynch had been a little too good for Port Sunlight Village and Work's John Eissen before he had a really excellent win over Tommy Lowndes who plays for the Hawksbury Club.

Next Sunday, October 26, Hoylake Central are running an Open Singles Tournament on the green in Hoylake. Play gets under way at 11am.
