LAST week was the second of this year's Isle of Man Tournaments and this time it was one of the Wirral Ladies players who took the honours.

Lynsey Gorman who plays for New Brighton Quarry Vikings won the main Ladies event. In the semis she beat last year's winner Tracy Ryan and went on to beat Violet Dennison of Cumbria 21-17 in the final.

On Sunday, the Wallasey Association held its last tournament of the year, the Wallasey Festival Handicap, on the greens in Central Park.

At the end of a very enjoyable day New Brighton Queens Royal's Paul Saville beat his club mate Ray Lynch in the final and took the trophy for the first time.

In the semi finals Saville had beaten Sandridge's Mark Bunting while Lynch was just too consistent for the Association's secretary Peter Dodd.

While the final was always close Saville generally had the edge and eventually ran out the 21-16 winner.

Results:

Quarter Finals: P. Saville (New Brighton Queens Royal) 21, M. Saville (Sandridge) 19; M. Bunting (Sandridge) 21, A. Richardson (Hoylake Central) 10; R. Lynch (New Brighton Queens Royal) 21, N. Gilmore (West Kirby Victoria) 13; P. Dodd (Hoylake Central) 21, L. Howard (Sandridge) 17. Semi Finals: Saville 21, Bunting 17; Lynch 21, Dodd 17. Final: Saville 21, Lynch 16.

The Birkenhead and District Afternoon Section's Centenary Cup Final was played at sunny Heswall on Friday, September 5, between Gladstone from the second division and Tixall 'B' from the fourth division.

The Tixall team took full advantage of their 40 start and eventually won the match by 18 points.

Dave Thomas gave the Gladstone team a great start with a 21-06 win and Tony Sullivan's 21-07 further helped their cause but the Tixall team matched Gladstone in having 5 winners during the afternoon, their top score was Ted Roscoe's 21-12, and they were able to hold on and take the trophy.

Last Tuesday, the twice delayed Merseyside Veterans Jim Parry Trophy was finally completed as the last eight returned to the green at the Liverpool Cricket Club.

Three Wirral players had got through to the quarters and though Hoylake Central's Tommy Walker was beaten at this stage West Kirby Victoria's Bill Atkinson and Higher Tranmere Vets Peter Webster got through to meet in a very close semi final in which Atkinson came from behind to just scrape through 15-14.

In the final, Atkinson played Liverpool's John Robinson and he took the trophy for the first time with a fairly comfortable 15-07 victory.
