THE Birkenhead and District Parks Merit was won by Tixall's Robert Rogers who beat Jamie Smith of Gladstone in the final.

The Tournament was held on the two greens in Port Sunlight on Sunday, July 20, and attracted a good field of players.

In the quarter finals Rogers beat Mick Andrews before he had another very good win over Danny Barwise who plays for the Kings.

Jamie Smith was taken all the way by Nigel Hughes in the quarters before he also had an good semi final win over his club mate at Gladstone, Nick Burridge.

The excellent final between two of the game's rapidly improving, younger players was close but Rogers took it 21-17.

Results:

Quarter Finals: D. Barwise 21, R. Kirby 06; R. Rogers 21, M. Andrews 15; J. Smith 21, N. Hughes 20; N. Burridge 21, M. Brook 13.

Semi Finals: Rogers 21, Barwise 11; Smith 21, Burridge 12. Final: Rogers 21, Smith 17.

All four of the semi finalists will now go on to represent Birkenhead and District in the British Parks Merit on August 10 in Sheffield Heswall RBL are the 2014 Cec Hannay Rose Bowls Champions; they added to their 2010 triumph when they beat Gladstone in the final played on the Manor Road green on Monday, July 14.

With a 12-point start and three winners in the first four jacks they had opened up a 23 shot lead but two great wins by Gladstone's Brian Hanlon, 21-05, and Chris Motley, 21-08, gave the Heswall team some cause for concern before they clinched victory with another three winners from the back four.

For the Heswall Club their best winners were Ian Johnson, 21-11, and Mal Andrews, 21-12.

The two Wirral Clubs left in the competition, Gladstone and Tixall, had great wins in the Cheshire Association's Brunner Cup quarter finals when they played last Saturday.

Gladstone had a fairly comfortable 224-191 win over Rudheath Sports in a match played at Grove Sports while Tixall beat the very strong Lloyds Hotel, 213-204 at St Oswald's green.

Next Sunday, July 27, the Wallasey Association's Federation team play a vital match against Colne Valley.

The home match will be played on West Kirby Victoria's green in Ashton Park, West Kirby while the away team is playing at Milnsbridge Bowling Club, Huddersfield. Play gets under way at 2pm.

The 21st Richard Evans Memorial Junior Competition will be held this Saturday, July 26, at Cammell Lairds.

Juniors should arrive by 11am for practise and the draw will be made at 11.30am.

As usual the tournament will be in two age groups, under 14 and under 18 by 1st January 2014.
