THE two players who fought through the qualifying rounds to get through to the final of this week's Sunday Flyers were your correspondent, West Kirby's Bill Atkinson, and Nigel Hughes who plays for the all conquering Tixall Club.

Though Atkinson had won the previous week's event it was Hughes who would have been the bookie's favourite to take his first win of the season.

However for the second successive week Atkinson upset the odds and he was able to record back-to-back wins.

In the quarter finals, Atkinson had another hard fought match against the player he had scraped through against in the semis last week, Roger Griffiths over from Prestatyn, and he then got the better of New Brighton Queens Royal's Eddie Dutton, the player who is currently in second place in the points table.

Hughes had struggled through his quarter final match against New Brighton Quarry Viking's John Cosgrove before being just too consistent for Birkenhead Park's Joe Edwards, another player high in the points table.

The early exchanges in the final were very close before Atkinson, playing a straight up and down mark, established a commanding 17-10 lead.

However Hughes came back to get to 16-18 before Atkinson struggled through to a nervy 21-18 victory.
