IN this session of the Winter Flyers, Tixall's Mick Andrews had won four of the nine tournaments played and he has built up a huge lead in the points table.

So when he yet again reached the final on Sunday, it seemed very likely that he would record win five.

However, his opponent on this occasion, your correspondent West Kirby's Bill Atkinson, clearly had other ideas and, taking advantage of the ideal conditions, he recorded his first victory of the session.

In the quarter-finals Atkinson had been too consistent for Port Sunlight's Peter McBride and he then just got the better of Roger Griffiths, over from Abergele, in a close semi-final match.

In his quarter-final with Upton Victory Hall's Bob Hodgson, Andrews had been on the edge of defeat at 20-16 down but he had held his nerve and just scraped through.

Then in the semi-final he beat his team mate at Tixall's, Ian Hazlehurst, who was making a welcome return to the game after an injury.

The final was surprisingly one sided as Atkinson dominated the game and the victory gave him a very happy birthday present.

Results:

Quarter-finals: R Griffiths 21, T Cavanagh 16; W Atkinson 21, P Mcbride 14; M Andrews 21, R Hodgson 20; I Hazlehurst 21, N Hughes 13.

Semi-finals: Atkinson 21, Griffiths 17; Andrews 21, Hazlehurst 13.

Final: Atkinson 21, Andrews 08.

Though Andrews lost this final he further extended his lead at the top of the points table and he has approximately twice as many points as Eddie Dutton in second place with Joe Edwards in third place.
