OVER the years Tixall's Mick Andrews has built up a fantastic record at the Winter Flyers and with yet another win this week, it looks as though he intends to continue to be the player who has to be beaten.

This week he defeated Lever's Colin Portis in the final to record his second successive win and third win in five visits in this session of tournaments.

To reach the final he had two fairly straightforward wins in the quarter and semi finals, firstly beating John Harrison who plays for the Liverpool Club Rice Lane in the quarter-final before yet again getting the better of Ritchie Marshall, a player who, at the moment, is without a club.

Portis meanwhile had had two excellent wins to get to the final, firstly a close game with John Hignett Jnr, based in Manchester these days, and then a somewhat easier game against West Kirby's Bill Atkinson in the semi-finals.

In the final Portis could not quite reproduce his earlier form and Andrews took a well deserved victory.

Results:

Quarter-finals: C Portis 21, J Hignett Jnr 18; W Atkinson 21, M Bunting 18; M Andrews 21, J Harrison 15; R Marshall 21, M McLaughlin 10.

Semi-finals: Portis 21, Atkinson 15; Andrews 21, Marshall 13.

Final: Andrews 21, Portis 15.

There is still time to object to the possible cuts in the maintenance of the greens that are being proposed in this area by filling in the questionnaire which has been produced by the Wirral Council.

Copies of this are to be found in many public places and it can also be completed on line.

The Wirral and District Crown Green Bowling Association has also produced a petition form stating that this is totally unacceptable.

This has been sent to all clubs and I would urge as many players as possible to add their names to the list to show their objections to this proposal.
