ON Sunday, this year's British Parks Individual Senior Merit Championship was held on the two greens at the New Brighton Cricket and Bowling Club.

Local players did really well with four getting to the quarter final stage and when Gladstone's John Finch reached the final it seemed possible that he could win yet another major trophy to add to his already impressive collection.

Unfortunately, it was not to be and he lost to the East Midlands player Danny Petcher in an excellent final.

Last week, Heswall RBL 'B' won the final of the Wirral District's Graham White Competition when they defeated New Brighton Quarry Vikings 'B'.

For Heswall, Colin Saville starred with a great 21-08 win and though the Quarry Viking's number 12, Owen Doyle, had a tremendous 21-07 win, by this time the match had already gone Heswall's way by 221 points to 190.

Many of the league winners have now been confirmed.

In the Birkenhead and Wirral League Tixall, Heswall RBL 'B' and Oxton Conservatives 'B' are the winners of the first, second and third divisions respectively.

In the Wallasey Association New Brighton Queens Royal, Manor Road 'B' and Bronze are the winners of the three divisions.

While in the Bebington and District League Gladstone have taken the 'A' Division. Well done to all these teams.

In the British Parks County Competition the Birkenhead and District team have won through to the semi final stage and will be playing Yorkshire next Sunday, August 18.

The home leg is at the Lever Club's green and the away match is in Eccleshall, Bradford.

Two Wallasey Association cup finals are taking place this week.

The first of these is the Presidents Cup which brings together Hoylake Central and New Brighton Queens Royal and the match is being played at Liscard Bowling Club in Central Park this Wednesday, August 14, with a 6pm start.

On Saturday, New Brighton Queens Royal are also involved in the final of the Wallasey News Cup when they take on Wallasey RBL in the final.

This match will be at Manor Road and also starts at 6pm. The Wallasey Association's Tom Bassnett Pairs Competition is taking place on Sunday August 18.

Players are advised to report by 10.30am for the draw at 10.45am. Though the pairings can be from different clubs all players must be registered with the Wallasey CGBA.

The Wirral Junior Merit was played on Saturday and after an exciting day's play the winner was Daniel Jeffries who beat Ryan Walters in the final.

The organisers of the event, Mo and John Evans, praised the excellent attitude and behaviour of all the players; they were a real credit to the game.
