ON SUNDAY, Wirral's two parks teams had an afternoon in which they experienced very differing fortunes.

Birkenhead and District team had a stunning victory over Cheshire, but Wallasey Association struggled against the bowlers of Greater Manchester.

In the home leg at Heswall RBL, Birkenhead and District had ten winners; with John Finch, Chris Motley and Peter Hammond all having single figure wins.

The away team also had a good afternoon with nine winners, Andy Hayes and Jamie Smith also won to single figures.

The performance of the day must have been Andy Hayes fantastic 21-04 away success.

These results gave Birkenhead and District a commanding 26 - 05 win and sets them up very well for their remaining fixtures.

Sadly, The Wallasey team could not match these results and though they had six winners at home, with Anthony Thompson's 21-08 win the best of these, they lost on points.

Unfortunately the away team could only manage two winners, Neil Sherbrooke and Chris Barton, and Wallasey lost both the home and away matches.

The overall result was a 23-08 win for the powerful Greater Manchester team and this leaves the Wallasey team with an awful lot of catching up to do in their remaining game.

On Saturday, the final stages of the Bebington and District's George O'Neill Memorial Trophy were played on the green at Cammell Laird’s.

In the semi-finals, Heswall RBL met Tixall 'B' and, with two big 15-02 wins for the pairings of Ian Johnson and Ray Jones and Rob Franklin and John Devlin, Heswall had a fairly comfortable victory.

However, the other semi-final was very close with Albany just sneaking home by one point against the favourites Gladstone; Albany were very indebted to a fantastic 15-02 win by Bob Thomas and Nikki Cooper.

Heswall then dominated the final taking four of the five matches; this included two 15-04 wins for Mally Andrews and Peter Milnes and Alf McDermott and Ron Jones, and they were deserved winners of the Trophy.

In the Wallasey Association's Sheppick Cup Final last Thursday evening Sandridge retained the Cup with a fine 21-shot win over Royden Hall at the New Brighton Cricket and Bowls Club.

Both teams had six winners on the night but two single figure winners for Sandridge, Rick Murray 21-02 and Josh Bunting 21-09, proved to be decisive.

Though Royden Hall's Neil Turner won 21-07 Sandridge crucially took three of the last four blocks to finally clinch their victory.
