Wirral bowling round-up

ALTHOUGH the day got off to a wet start the sun came out and yet again brought a good morning to play bowls in Birkenhead Park.

The final was an all Tixall affair with Ian Hazlehurst having his first win of this session against points leader Mick Andrews.

Hazlehurst had a potentially difficult run of games to the final but he won all of his matches in good style and thoroughly deserved his victory.

In the quarter-finals he had a fairly comfortable win against the player who is currently second in the points table, John Jones of Baileys Hill, and he then beat Gladstone's Anthony O'Neill.

Andrews had two big wins in qualifying for the final; firstly against Port Sunlight's Nick Woodward and then the Lever Club's Dougie Briscoe.

The final was close but Hazlehurst edged ahead and maintained his form to take the top spot and take himself into the top five in the points table.

Results:

Quarter-finals: M Andrews 21, N Woodward 11, D Briscoe 21, F Doherty 10; A O'Neill 21, J Hignett Snr 20; I Hazlehurst 21, J Jones 13.

Semi-finals: Andrews 21, Briscoe 10; Hazlehurst 21, O'Neill 18.

Final: Hazlehurst 21, Andrews 16.

Next week is the final qualifying day to get points before the top sixteen in the points table battle it out in the final session on Sunday. December 23.

Apart from the three already mentioned other players currently near the top of the table are Nick Thornton, Dougie Briscoe and John Harrison.

Once again I would like to take this opportunity to urge everyone to get themselves a questionnaire and express their feelings about the proposed cuts to council services.
