Large turnout of players for Sunday Flyers in Birkenhead Park

THERE was another large turnout of players this weekend in Birkenhead Park and when John Jones reached the final of the Flyers for the second consecutive Sunday it seemed likely that the prize money would, once again, go to a Welsh player.

However, Magazine's Fred Arnell had other ideas and, after a thrilling fight back, it was Arnell who had his first win of the season.

Arnell only just won through in a great match in the quarter finals against Tony Cavanagh before beating Colin Mounsey in the semis.

After Jones had been just a little too good for Peter McBride in the quarters he then had a very good win against the in-form Nick Thornton in their semi final match.

Though Arnell took an early lead in the final Jones fought back and when he took an 18 -13 lead it looked all over, however Arnell refused to give in and, upping his game, he broke back and ran out a 21-18 winner.

Results:

Quarter-finals: N Thornton 21, N Woodward 09; J Jones 21, P Mcbride 17; F Arnell 21, T Cavanagh 19; C Mounsey 21, C Watterson 17.

Semi-finals: Jones 21, Thornton 16; Arnell 21, Mounsey 13.

Final: Arnell 21, Jones 18.
