Welsh marauders snatch top prizes for second week in a row
2:52pm Tuesday 6th November 2012 in Bowls By Bill Atkinson
FOR the second successive week, marauders from across the border took the top prize at the Winter Flyers Tournament.
John Jones, who plays for the Baileys Hill Club in North Wales, emulated his team mate Paul Roberts and won on Sunday.
In the final, he beat another player who now plies his trade away from the Wirral, Robbie Fitzpatrick of the Morton House Club in West Yorkshire.
In the quarter-final, Jones was too good for the usually very consistent John Cosgrove before just scraping through against the most successful player at these events, Tixall's Mick Andrews in the semis.
Fitzpatrick, making his first appearance of the year, dominated Vic Alcock in their quarter-final match but he then had a real battle against Roger Griffiths, another player who now plays his bowls in North Wales, just scraping through by 21 points to 19.
Jones played very well in the final and his consistent accuracy and length meant that he had a fairly comfortable win.
Results:
Quarter-finals: R Griffiths 21, D McDermott 16; R Fitzpatrick 21, V Alcock 10; J Jones 21, J Cosgrove 12; M Andrews 21, N Lloyd 10.
Semi-finals: Fitzpatrick 21, Griffiths 19; Jones 21, Andrews 20.
Final: Jones 21, Fitzpatrick 14.
