Wirral stuns Kirkby Lonsdale
2:37pm Monday 22nd April 2013 in Rugby
THIS was the last home game of the season and whilst it was the last league Saturday, Wirral still have another match to play for and were eager to score maximum points to climb up the league.
They achieved their try bonus point as early as the 24th minute through a wonderful exhibition of 15 man rugby and the main beneficiary was the backs who scored seven tries in all, writes Richard McNeil.
The first half was all Wirral as the speed of the backs destroyed the Kirkby Lonsdale defence with three tries from Danny Harvey and one each from Rob Pearl, Chris Hughes and James Annetts.
The latter's incisive pace laid on some of these scores.
Two of the tries were converted by captain Craig Harvey, who then retired from the field at half time with Wirral holding a commanding 34-0 lead.
Whilst Wirral had the opportunities to add to their score early in the second half it was the visitors, who stuck man fully to their task and scored two tries through Richard Sayer and Tom Groves.
In the final 10 minutes the Wirral try scoring machine clicked into gear with Danny Harvey going in for his fourth try, followed by James Annetts and Adam Sheldon with James Annetts converting two.
In the dying minute of the game, Ben Walker who had worked tirelessly for the visitors scored an opportunist try from close in.
This win leaves Wirral in fourth place with a game to play.
They are away against Leigh on Saturday.
Whilst they can’t improve on their position, this has been their most successful season in this highly competitive division.
