Big turnout for weekend Flyers tournament
1:58pm Monday 22nd October 2012 in Sport
THERE was a big turnout for this week's Flyers Tournament held on a sunny morning in Birkenhead Park, and it was good to see one of the younger players taking his first win in this event.
Albany's Nick Thornton played really well throughout and after a good run of results he was too good for Manor Road's Tommy Howell in the final.
In his quarter-final match, Thornton beat last week's beaten finalist, Eddie Dutton, before he went one better beating Colin Strowbridge, last week's winner, in the semis.
Meanwhile Howell, having an excellent morning, had two great wins, firstly getting the better of Ian Hazlehurst in a tight game and then beating the winner from two weeks ago, Tommy Walker.
The final was a different matter all together though and Thornton's relentless accuracy swept him to an fairly one-sided victory.
Results:
Quarter-finals: C Strowbridge 21, J Cosgrove 15; N Thornton 21, E Dutton 15; T Howell 21, I Hazlehurst 17; T Walker 21, R Abernathy 13.
Semi-finals: Thornton 21, Strowbridge 18; Howell 21, Walker 15.
Final: Thornton 21, Howell 07.
At the Flyers the previous week, Colin Strowbridge of Kings 2000 turned up for his first ever visit to these tournaments and surprised the regulars by winning a hard-fought final against Eddie Dutton and taking the first prize.
Results:
Quarter-finals: E Dutton 21, N Thornton 13; M Andrews 21, A Buchanan 10; V Alcock 21, P McBride 13; C Strowbridge 21, R Hodgson 18.
Semi-finals: Dutton 21, Andrews 17; Strowbridge 21, Alcock 16.
Final: Strowbridge 21, Dutton 19.
