Wallasey and district Sunday Football League: Closure of grounds 'unneccessary'
AN early and what seems to be an unnecessary closure of all grounds by the council caused many high profile games to be postponed, with only a few managing to escape the cull due to being staged on private facilities.
This action caused many teams to ask why such a decision was taken when the weather forecast for a four day period was for sunny and windy weather, which obviously made the majority of council grounds fit for use?
However, one of the few fixtures to get played was the derby match between Manor Youth and Manor Reds and produced a game full of chances and end to end football.
Jason Stephens opened the scoring midway through the first half for the Youth and a goal from Jamie Mitchell after 80 minutes increased their lead to two nil, but a late effort from John Brown for the Reds brought about a respectable 2-1 result for the Youth, who move into the top six.
The only Wirral FA Amateur Cup 2nd round game to take place saw FC Victoria forfeit home advantage but win the tie with a 2-1 success away at Millcroft thanks to an own goal and a Danny Holdsworth effort in a hard fought encounter that now sees them drawn away against Windmill in round three.
All teams are asked to check with either the league secretary or the website to see the rearranged fixtures for next week, as many teams are affected by the closure of grounds this week.
Sad news befell the league last week with the passing away of Gary Hughes who played for many years within the league and was a well known and much like figure with those who knew him.
Uncompromising on the pitch, but full of wit off it, he will be remembered for his whole hearted effort for whoever he played for and the thoughts of the entire league go to his beloved family at this sad time.
