Mixed fortunes for Wirral bowlers

THERE were mixed fortunes for Wirral's two Parks' teams on Sunday.

The Birkenhead and District team completed a resounding victory over Warwickshire.

The home team at Royden had 11 winners and the away team also won, taking eight of the twelve games, and this gave an overall result of 26-05 in favour of the Birkenhead team.

At home there were several single figure wins with the best of these being 21-03 victories for two of the Gladstone players, Mike Whalley and Brian Hanlon while for the away team the outstanding performance was a 21-06 win for Steve Harrison.

The Wallasey Association team took on South Yorkshire and though the home team did very well in having eight winners at Manor Road, the away team, playing in Sheffield, had, to say the least, a disappointing afternoon with only one winner.

At home Steve Scott of Queens Royal had a great 21-11 win while in Sheffield the lone winner was Upton Victory Hall's John Cosgrove.

Overall, the match result was 20-11 in favour of the team from South Yorkshire.

Several local clubs were involved in the Cheshire Association's Norman Cup on Saturday.

Two Wirral teams had to play each other on Heswall RBL's green and at the end of a good afternoon's play it was Tixall who came out on top with a 24-point win.

There were excellent performances by John Rogers and Robbie Hall.

West Kirby Victoria took on the very strong Houldsworth team at the Red Lion in Frodsham and though the teams each had five winners the Deeside team unfortunately lost by just four points.

The best of the Vics 5 winners was Leigh Brocklebank with a fine 21-10 victory.

The semi-finals of the Sansom Cup were played on Wednesday evening and as a result of this the final on Wednesday, July 4 will be between old rivals Tixall and Gladstone.

Playing at Pensby Tixalls had a very convincing 64 point win over The Lever Club.

However the game between Gladstone and West Kirby Victoria, played on the Port Sunlight Village and Works green, was a much closer affair and the result was in some doubt to the very end of a sporting and keenly fought contest.

Gladstone finally took the match by seven shots.

The Junior Merit Tournament played at Cammell Lairds on Saturday attracted 30 entries and after a great day's bowling, the winner was Ray Anderson who beat Kieron Ivers in the final.
