LEIGHTON McGivern was the hero yet again with two important goals as Motors progressed into the next round of the FA Trophy.

The home side took the lead on nine minutes when man-of-the-match Kevin Holsgrove made good progress on the right wing before pulling the ball back to McGivern who took a touch before firing home from ten yards out.

Although Motors started the brightest, Marine gradually started to threaten with half-time approaching and were rewarded for their efforts on 38 minutes.

An Aaron Rey left wing cross caused havoc in the Motors penalty area and forced Paul Jones to turn the ball into his own net from close range.

Just two minutes later, Marine took the lead following some neat approach play from Neil Harvey and new signing Robbie Lawton setting up Joe Fowler 20 yards out, the midfield man picking his spot with a sweetly hit sidefooted strike in to the top corner to give the away side the lead at half-time.

After the interval both sides had chances to score but the Motormen had to wait until the 67th minute until they grabbed their equaliser.

Holsgrove was again the provider, weaving his way through the Marine defence before hitting a dangerous low right wing cross which hit Aaron Rey and went past the helpless Marine keeper Ryan McMahon for the second own goal of the game.

Marine midfielder Jonathan Goulding brought the save of the game from Scott Tynan shortly after with a rising drive from 25 yards which was heading towards the top corner, the home keeper pulling off an outstanding full length stop to tip the ball away for a corner.

The winner came with 12 minutes remaining when Vauxhall winger Craig Mahon was blatantly tripped by Ian Latham in the penalty area giving the referee no alternative but to award Motors a penalty.

McGivern stepped up and calmly converted the resulting spot-kick to put Motors into the next round of the FA Trophy.

Vauxhall: Tynan, Fearnehough, Bennett, Hannigan, Jones, Burke (Beck 80), Mahon, Mannix, McGivern, Holsgrove, Lawless (Stockton 75) Subs not used: Noone, Benn, Saxton.

Vauxhall manager Carl Macauley has bolstered his attacking options with the loan signing of teenage striker Cole Stockton from local neighbours Tranmere Rovers.

The 18-year-old hitman has been making waves with Rovers’ reserve team and recently scored a hat-trick in a 7-2 victory over Macclesfield Town.

Stockton made his debut for Motors last Saturday, coming on as a substitute in the 3-2 FA Trophy victory against Marine.

Motors are at home again this Saturday, December 3, when they play Histon.

Kick-off at Rivacre Park is 3pm.
