West Kirby secure runaway win over Runcorn Town in West Cheshire League

INSPIRED by a sparkling hat trick from Mike Burke, West Kirby served notice on their rivals in the race for the Carlsberg West Cheshire League's Division One crown, after they posted a 4-2 result over runaway leaders, Runcorn Town.

A Lee Gibson penalty rounded off a 4-2 victory, as John Brett's invincibles strove to emulate Cammell Laird's four consecutive top flight titles from 1989 to 1992.

Second-placed Heswall stayed in contention, after a solitary strike from Danny McNicholas earned maximum spoils from a testing contest at bottom club, Blacon YC, but Cammell Laird Res. faltered after they finished 1-1 with Halton.

Alan Bull and Steve Horrocks were the respective marksmen. Danny Dobbins claimed the game's only goal as Castrol Social won at Willaston, but an Anthony Carroll effort counted for nothing after Newton capitulated to replies from Maghull's Tom Foley and Gerrard Forde.

Elsewhere, ninety minutes failed to produce a goal between Ellesmere Port and Marine Res.

Division Two leaders, Mossley Hill Ath, stormed four points clear at the top, following a 2-0 decision over Heswall Res, confirmed by efforts from Neil McCarthy and Kevin Frankland, but second placed Southport Trinity suffered their second defeat on the trot, after goals from Joe Dixon(2) Joe McNulty and Lee Welsh saw local rivals, Marshalls secure a 4-1 triumph.

Bronze Social top scored with a 5-1 win over potential wooden spoonists, Capenhurst Villa, who now have seven games left to redeem themselves, while a 62nd minute header from Owen Davies, gave FC Pensby the nod over Mallaby at Ridgewood Park.

New Brighton's title bid took the knock, after they were held 0-0 by West Kirby Res and Bebington Ath's winning sequence was interrupted, after they finished 0-0 with Ashville.

In Division Three, leaders Hale stayed four points in credit, courtesy of a 4-1 victory at Capenhurst Villa Res, which featured efforts from Harry Edwards, Paul Hart, Andy Morgan and Wayne Smith.

Nearest rivals, Ashville Res, stayed in the mix thanks to their 4-0 eclipse of Mossley Hill Ath Res Andy Johnson and Anthony White weighed in with two goals each.

A smart double from Sam Gifford sparked Prescot Cables Res to a 4-2 result over Manor Ath, while Mark Ellison went one better with a hat trick, as Southport Trinity Res drew 3-3 with Mersey Royal, who hit back through Billy Newman, Nathan Jones and an own goal.

Paul Gouthwaite bagged the game's only goal, as Richmond Raith Rovers accounted for Upton AA Res.

Larry Southart and Josh Williams obliged for the winners and it was the end of the road also for South Liverpool, who lost 4-3 after extra time to Mersey Royal.

Extra-time and penalties were required before Mayfield eliminated St.Sebastians, while a Tom Byrne double was supplemented by Sean Heggary effort, as Bebington Ath. beat Belfry 3-0.

Maghull won by the same scoreline against Mount Ath, thanks to goals from Brad Smart, Owen Duffy and Paul Grant.

Efforts from John Hammett(2) and Mark Hyslop guided AFC Liverpool to a 3-2 result at Sao Paulo.
