Wirral Sunday League success for Prenton Park


DIVISION One title favourites, Prenton Park, pulled off the result of Wirral Sunday League's Pyke Cup Third round, after they lowered the flag of Premier Division title contenders, Sportsmans Victoria.

A goal from ace marksman, Philly Owen, allied to a Joey Barton penalty swung a 2-1 decision in Park's favour, on a day that fellow Division One outfit, 80's Casuals, also made it to the last eight, after they sent Premier side Towers toppling to a 2-0 defeat.

Current Premier Division leaders, MSC Eastham, had hoped to go one better than beaten finalists last season, but party poopers and cup holders, Lancelyn Glenavon, had other ideas, and posted an impressive 5-1 victory.

A smart double from Wayne Ball and a John Gann effort steered Sportsmans Arms to a 3-0 decision over Wirral Ath.

Ben Scott struck three times and was joined on the scoresheet by Terry New, as big guns Euro Wirral accounted for Ravenscroft 4-2. Peter Doyle claimed both consolations for the hosts.

Kent's passage to the quarter finals was secured, after John O'Brien, Kyle Allcock, Billy Duffy and Thomas Alley netted in the 4-1 verdict over game battlers, Neston.

After finishing the first half, 0-0, Railway Meols turned on the style after the break, and romped home 5-0 against Imperial. Robbie Gittens(2) Matty Cookson, Tommy Evans and Mike Sheldon were the hot-shots.

Steve Comber's goal counted for nothing, after Bromborough capitulated to replies from Peggy Gadfly's Craig Bennett, Paul Williams and Lee Hammond.

Sunday's Premier Division action saw Tixalls record their third win of the season.

Three goal Ryan Innes left his calling card in the 7-1 rout of Wirral Health.

Dave Evans, Mike Salisbury, Robbie White and promising youngster, Steve Jones, also netted, with Mark Leyfield in reply for the Hospital men.

TSF put a a five-point cushion between themselves and second to bottom Wirral Health, after efforts from Peter Brown(2) and Alan Fowlie sealed an important 3-2 win at Eagle & Crown.

In Division One, Maritime leapfrogged Sportsmans Arms into second place, as a result of their 4-0 win over PSI. Hero of the hour was two goal man of the match, Paul O'Brien.

Chronicle kept their outside chances of promotion alive after they beat Wallasey Village 4-0, and Wirral FC eased their way clear of bottom spot, after Gary Corkhill and a dramatic last gasp winner from Dave Day set up a 2-1 victory over Gladstone Ath.

New leaders in Division Two are Parkview Social, who assumed pole position after Mickey McCann, Jason Wilde, Aaron Mawdsley, Stuey Payne and Dave Irwin celebrated with a goal apiece in the 5-1 blitz of Orchard FC.

Third-placed Lord Raglan were indebted to efforts from Andy Williams and Brian Baber for their 2-1 success at Tranmere Vics. while an opportunist effort from Kenny Holland helped Morton Arms to a 1-1 draw with Carlton.

The Wirral Sunday League has a limited number of vacancies for clubs wishing to join the league for season 2010/11.
