Caldy maintain winning form at expense of Waterloo

CALDY as expected maintained winning form in National Two North League at the expense of bottom of the table Waterloo.

It finished 10-40 at Blundellsands with the Lancashire side producing some spirited play but never being able to match their more talented opponents.

Waterloo who had shipped over 100 points the previous weekend restricted Caldy to a 14-0 interval advantage achieved thanks to tries via Gavin Roberts and Paul Arnold plus two conversions by Richard Vasey.

Roberts and Arnold also touched down in the second period. Mark Turner and Andy Soutar added to the tally.

Vasey landed another three goals.

Waterloo crossed twice in the end and had to be applauded for their courageous effort in what was always going to be a hopeless cause.

The victory kept Caldy in the thick of the promotion race but close rivals Loughborough Students and Macclesfield both also won.

Birkenhead Park returned to winning ways at West Park in National Three North League thanks to a remarkable second-half turn around.

The home side built up a 20-0 advantage with three tries, a conversion and a penalty.

A wake up call for Birkenhead worked. Steve Lowry nipped over from a maul in the third quarter with Dave Hall adding the extras. Then Chris Tymms crossed and it was game on again.

The visitors closed to within one point, thanks to a try from Tony Handley gaoled by Hall and in added time winger Mike Chapman got in at the corner to complete the come back in a 24-20 outcome.

Anselmians enjoyed a 62-12 romp against Ormskirk in South Lancashire/Cheshire One but Hoylake were on the wrong side of a 16-21 scoreline at Oswestry.

It was also not good for Wallasey in Division Two as they were comprehensively beaten 37-3 by Ashton on Mersey.

New Brighton, Oldershaw, Parkonians, Prenton and Port Sunlight were amongst sides not to play but there is a full league programme this Saturday.

Caldy entertain Preston Grasshoppers, Birkenhead Park go to Middlesborough and New Brighton have Vale of Lune as visitors.

Other games include Anselmians v Oswestry, Hoylake at Bowden, Wirral at Ormskirk, Oldershaw at Collegiate, Wallasey at Southport, Prenton at Congleton and Port Sunlight at Linley.

Parkonians do not have a fixture.
