West Cheshire League round-up

THE race for the Carlsberg West Cheshire League's Division One title took on another twist at the weekend, as the leadership changed hands once again.

Heswall's fixture at bottom club Blacon YC was postponed, and that gave Runcorn Town the chance to wrestle pole position from the Gayton Park challengers.

A smart double from Emini Adegbenro steered Runcorn back to the top on goal difference, following a narrow 2-1 victory over Ellesmere Port.

After having three points deducted due to a rule infringement, fourth placed Cammell Laird Res. suffered a double whammy, after they lost 3-1 at home to Maghull.

A Reggie Foley double and a Sam Wilkie effort sealed the win for the visitors. Timmy Bigland replied for the hosts.

A penalty from Upton AA's Simon Andrews proved scant reward, after the improving Halton edged a 2-1 decision, thanks to two goals from Gary Tyrell.

The same scoreline went in Willaston's favour against Christleton, courtesy of goals from Robbie Foulkes and Dave Forbes. Danny Davies scored the Chester club's consolation.

Division Two action saw Chester Nomads crank up their challenge for the title, after Dale Harris struck twice in the 2-0 success at Bebington Ath. Adam Johnson, Adam Corless, Matty Kingham and Matty Singlton found the net in Ashville's 4-0 rout of Grange Ath.

Bronze Social showed that they do like to be beside the seaside, after a solitary strike from Shaun Mooney earned maximum spoils from their trip to New Brighton.

Andy Edge gave Heswall the lead in a competitive tussle with Mallaby, but the visitors rallied to share the points after Steve Abbott put the finishing touch to a measured through ball from Jon Finlay on 48 minutes.

A fine hat trick from Ged Ford anchored Maghull Res to an impressive 4-1 triumph over FC Pensby, while Marshalls' 2-0 win over West Kirby Res., was confirmed by goals from Joe McNulty and Phil Davies.

Goals from Paul Hayes and Paul Mort assured Ashville Res. of a 2-1 victory at Southport Trinity Res, and elevated them to second place in Division Three.

Efforts from Richard Wright, Lee Williams and an own goal, kept Manor Ath., on the fringes of the promotion race following their fine 3-1 win at Mersey Royal and in the shock result of the day, bottom club, Blacon YC Res., chose Saturday to post their first win of the season, after they overcame fourth placed Prescott Cables Res. 2-1.

Phil Durcan and Adam Breck were on target in Mossley Hil Ath.'s 2-0 over Capenhurst Villa Res. while Ellesmere Port Res. were indebted to efforts from Jay James and Lee Moores for their 2-1 win against Runcorn Town Res.

Only one game survived the weather in the Youth Division, and it was celebration time for Hale, after a Josh Williams treble, and a Larry Southart brace sparked a 5-4 win at Belfry. Paul Taylor(2) Steve Gale and Tommy Seddon were on the mark for the losers.

All conquering West Kirby, were given a good run for their money by battling Newton in the Wirral & District FA Senior Cup quarter finals, before a Mike Burke hat trick, allied to further goals from Kieron Fleetwood and Paul Casey clinched a 5-4 extra time victory.

Richmond Raith Rovers secured their West Cheshire Shield semi-final berth, after they beat Christleton Res. 3-1 with goals from Barry Tremarco, Ryan Miller and John Garner.
