Carlsberg West Cheshire League

RUNCORN Town re-ignited their challenge for the Carlsberg West Cheshire League's Division One title, and boosted their goals tally after they stormed home 6-1 against bottom club, Blacon YC.

A Simon Burton hat trick, allied to further efforts from Tyson Eyo, Tony Wynne and John McEvoy secured the win, which elevated Runcorn to third place in the table, six points adrift of current leaders, Heswall, with three games in hand.

Ross Broadbent bagged the Chester outfit's consolation.

Goal-hungry Helsby also put in a good shift, and maintained their outside title chances after three goal star, Connor Taylor shone in the 7-2 eclipse of Upton AA, whose league defeats have now entered double figures.

Sam Bailey weighed in with a brace while singles from James Bignell and Gaz Gerrard completed the scoreline. Upton's replies came from Derek Rodgers and Simon Andrews.

In Division Three, Ashville Res. leapfrogged Christleton Res. into fourth place in the table, after they put Manor Ath. to the sword.

Adam Johnson scored twice and was joined on the scoresheet by Anthony White, Andy Johnston and Mark Bainbridge as the hosts savoured a 5-1 triumph. A Lewis Hough goal was the visitors' contribution.

Willaston's excellent 2-0 victory over Woodley in the Cheshire FA Saturday Amateur Cup 4th round insured that all four semi-finalsts are West Cheshire clubs.

Ollie Stearman and Robbie Foulkes were on target for the victors, but despite goals from Ilya Hancock, Dan Riley and Kieran Smith, gallant Division Two battlers, Chester Nomads, suffered a 4-3 extra time defeat at the hands of Division One counterparts, Newton.

Anthony Carroll, Jamie Hannah, Steve Jones and Keith Gray found the net for the Frankby side, who now join Castrol Social, Willaston and holders West Kirby in the last four.

On the District scene, Marshalls posted a fine 6-2 win over St Michael's in the Liverpool County FA Junoior cup fourth round, thanks to efforts from Phil Davies(2) Josh Birch(2) Richard Jones and Joe Dixon.

Semi-final places are up for grabs this Saturday as six clubs prepare to lock horns in the Wirral & District FA Senior Cup 2nd round. Castrol Social, Ellesmere Port and Vauxhall Motors Res. entertain Willaston, strongly fancied Heswall and Cammell Laird Res. respectively.

Waterloo Dock stand in the way of Maghull progressing to the last four of the Liverpool FA Challenge Cup, while Cheshire County FA, represented by reigning Division One champions, West Kirby, put the welcome mat out for the Westmorland FA (Kendall Town) in the Northern Counties Cup at Marine Park.
