Caldy back to winning ways

CALDY returned to winning ways, New Brighton drew but Birkenhead Park suffered an agonising defeat in the latest round of league action.

Caldy came away 41-29 to the good from Hull in National Two North. Fly-half Richard Vasey played a key role with a twenty one points haul and Paul Arnold grabbed his tenth try of the season.

The Wirral side stepped over Macclesfield and are now just behind Loughborough Students at the top of the table.

Birkenhead fell 21-26 at National Three North leaders Morley with the winning try for the Yorkshire outfit coming from the very last move in the seventh minute of added time.

It was really tough on Park who failed to capitalise on earlier chances which would have killed off the opposition.

Andy Trotter and Freeman Payne scored the Park tries and Dave Hall landed three penalties and a conversion.

New Brighton finished 15-15 at home to Altrincham Kersal in North One West but had a 2-0 try count in their favour.

In the end it was own indiscretions which cost them as the East Cheshire outfit struck five penalties.

Anthony Birley and Paul Lewis crossed for Brighton and Birley managed a conversion and a penalty.

Player coach Simon Mason played a key role for Anselmians in their South Lancashire/Cheshire One derby victory over Wirral at Malone Field.

It finished 27-25 in a thriller with Mason kicking five penalties and a conversion. Adam Neal and Sion Rowlands scored the home tries.

Wirral gained touch downs via Adam Stephens, Bill Donaldson, Ross Page and Tom Clegg. Sam Broadbent managed one conversion and a penalty but missed a late kick which would have levelled the scores in a tense affair.

Hoylake fell 8-27 at Winnington Park where they played most of the match a man short with prop Ian Stephenson red carded. Joe Lavin scored a try and Steve Young a penalty.

Wallasey crashed 72-0 at Ruskin Park in Division Two but neighbours Oldershaw faired better in a 12-8 success at Orrell Anvils.

John Jones and Matty Blackmore crossed and Rob Potter goaled once.

Prenton cruised home 55-0 against Congleton in Division Three with Steve Evans and Mike Salisbury getting two touch downs each.

Stephen Leehay and Jamie Newman also got in on the try scoring act.

Port Sunlight lost 11-43 against Linley. Dave Tarr crossed and Jim Roberts managed a penalty and a drop goal.

There is more league action on Saturday. Caldy have Hull Ionians as visitors and Birkenhead Park welcome Penrith. New Brighton take the road to Aspatria.

Other fixtures include Hoylake v Dukinfield, Wirral v Glossop, Anselmians at Widnes, Oldershaw v Marple, Wallasey v Sefton, a Parkonians v Port Sunlight derby and Prenton at Helsby.
