Cammell Laird . . . 2CAMMELL Laird hope to put their surprise FA Cup exit behind them and use the E.ON-sponsored FA Trophy as their route to Wembley on Saturday.
Curzon Ashton are the visitors to Kirklands in a preliminary round tie (kick-off 3pm) and it promises to be a thriller. Curzon are currently top of the UniBond League Division One North with Lairds holding second spot in the Southern section.
Meanwhile, Lairds have pulled off a transfer scoop with the signing of tough defender Greg Stones from Blue Square Conference club Stafford Rangers.
Wirral-based Stones, aged 25, has been the subject of interest from several Football League clubs and trialled with Crewe Alexandra prior to the start of the season.
Stones started his career at West Cheshire League club Poulton Victoria and has been an impressive and versatile performer on the Welsh scene, first with Rhyl, then TNS, with whom he played in Champions League qualifiers last year.
In the past, he has attracted interest from Wrexham and Tranmere and was close to sealing a move to the Racecourse before Denis Smith was sacked last January. He signed full-time for Stafford Rangers at the start of the season.
Stones made an impressive debut on Saturday in Lairds' 2-0 triumph at Alsager Town in the UniBond League Division One South - the Birkenhead club's fourth win at the Town Ground in three years.
Two first-half strikes by Alex Hay and promising youngster John Corrigan (penalty) were just reward for a fine team performance which hoisted Lairds to second place in the table.
