THE Wallasey Association's Individual Merit Tournament was played on the greens in Harrison Park last Sunday, September 16.

The winner was West Kirby Victoria's Mally Andrews, who beat three times winner Matthew Gilmore in the final.

Andrews played very well throughout the day and thoroughly deserved his victory.

Quarter Finals: M.Gilmore 21, A.Richardson 07; M.Saville 21, M.Daugherty 20; M.Andrews 21, J. Isaac 13; J.Lloyd 21, J.Joy 10.

Semi Finals: Gilmore 21, Saville 13; Andrews 21, Lloyd 17. Final: Andrews 21, Gilmore 12.

The four semi finalists, Mally Andrews, Matthew Gilmore, Maureen Saville and John Lloyd will represent the Wallasey Association in the Federation Individual Merit in Leyland on Sunday, October 7.

This year's series of the popular 'Winter' Flyers Tournaments got underway this Sunday in Birkenhead Park and the first winner of the year was Tixall's Matthew Gilmore who beat his father Dave in the final. In the semi final Matthew Gilmore beat New Brighton Quarry Viking's Richard Bendrey, who had played very well in his first visit to these tournaments while Dave Gilmore came through against West Kirby's Bill Atkinson.

The first playing of the Birkenhead and Wirral Afternoon Section's Shield final between Heswall RBL and Oxton Conservative Club on Friday, September 7 finished in a draw, 182-182.

The final was replayed on the Thingwall green on Friday, and this time the Heswall club just managed to scrape home in another close game.

Both teams had five winners but excellent wins by Richie Jamieson, 21-07, Mally Andrews, 21-09, Colin Saville, 21-10 and Geoff Dewhurst, 21-12 enabled the Heswall Club to overcome the 20 point handicap and clinch a tight victory by 189 shots to 183.

The final of the Afternoon Section's other team tournament, the Centenary Cup was played on Friday September 14 on Albany's green between Manor Road and the Lever Club.

Manor Road had to give their second division opponents a 30-point start, but with nine winners, five of them to single figures, Manor Road found this no problem and they ran out the winners by 45 shots.

For Manor Road their best winners were Ray Jones, 21-05, and Steve Scott, 21-06, while Robin Probing had a great 21-08.
