TRANMERE were winners of the Cheshire Walking Football Annual Summer Festival over 50's 6-a-side tournament.

The team, consisting of players between the ages of 52-70, walked their way to victory beating teams from Manchester, Widnes, Helsby and Prescot to the trophy during the competiton in Northwich.

Club manager Peter Bligh told the Globe: "This is the third trophy won by the Tranmere team after winning the Cheshire Walking Football Premier League for the past two seasons.

"The team was managed on the day by player manager Mark Johnson who did a brilliant job in steering the magnificent seven to the win.

"What can I say about the players?

"Well, there is acrobatic Ken our amazing shot stopper who was in the same class at school, some 50 years ago, as Rob our star striker and Tony in the middle who reads the game like a bookworm devours books.

"Brazilian Carlos is our key player and instinctively knows how to unlock defences.

"Then there is 'Though shalt not pass' Clive, marshalling our defence along with Bruce our eldest player who got the ball rolling for us oldies to play tournament football.

"Goals by Carlos (3) and Rob secured our success on the day.

"Our eldest player at the sessions is 80 year old Richard who was once on Wolverhampton Wanderer’s books and still knows where the goal is.

"Many people who attend these sessions have health issues and these sessions have given us all a new lease of life."

The Tranmere team is formed from players who play at Tranmere Rovers Recreation Centre at Prenton Park every Monday from 2pm-3pm and Wednesday from 11am-12pm.
