TRANMERE Rovers boss' Micky Mellon says the focus will be fixed firmly on picking up points this weekend, regardless of results elsewhere in the National League.

By the time his side team face Halifax Town on Saturday afternoon, top-of-the-table Macclesfield Town could have beaten Eastleigh FC and clinched the title, with Rovers in the play-offs.

During a press conference at the club's Solar Campus training ground in Leasowe this afternoon, an unfazed Mellon said, whatever the result on Saturday, his aim will be the same: "We will get prepared tomorrow, training the best way that we can.

"I will expect my players to improve and will try to challenge them to try to improve.

"Regardless of anything else that happens, I will expect my team to play well and try to pick up three points. That is it.

"It will be the same on Tuesday (against Solihul Moors). That's the way we always approach things here.

"We are a group that continually wants to improve and a football club that's trying to improve all the time and get back to a serious level.

"Our mindset won't change, won't waver. It's good to have a full squad to be able to pick from."

Praising his side’s performance throughout the season, Mellon reflected: "Since they played on astro-turf against Bromley in September, their form of results has been nothing short of fantastic.

"They've picked up an awful lot of points, particularly after the slow start that they had. It's been very, very good.

“The momentum has been building since then. There have been bits and pieces that we've wanted to get better, but who isn't trying to improve?

"We're in a good place and enjoying the last lap of the season.

"There's a lot at stake, so we’ll just get on with it.

"The expectation should be that we are challenging at the top end of the table, because of the size of the club."

The manager also provided an update on other players who have been carrying knocks in recent weeks.

He said: "A lot of the players who have had niggles are back training now.

"Manny Monthe, Jack Dunn and Eddie Clarke have all trained today and are back in the group.

"James Wallace will start to train again next week, so we're looking good and enjoying being out on the training pitch in the sunshine."

But out of action until next season is striker Ben Tollitt, who sustained a knee ligament injury in last Saturday's game Aldershot Town, which ended 2-0 for the hosts at Prenton Park.

Mellon said: "First and foremost, it's terribly disappointing for the boy because he had worked so hard to get himself back.

"But you always try and look for the positives from the situation and I spoke to him this morning and he’ll be back for pre-season training so you just have to look forward now.

"He has to prepare now to be as best ready for pre-season now and support his team mates in the best way that he can."

His message to the squad’s all-important 12th man - the fans – is simple: "Keep doing what you’ve been doing all season for us.

"There's nothing more that we require from them.

"They always support us really well.

"There were 340 followed us to Dover on Tuesday night, for example, which is incredible support so far away from home.

"We really appreciate and are grateful for that. It's always superb support."
