FORMER two-time world snooker champion Mark Williams will take on Wirral players during a tournament in aid of The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity next week.

During the event at Poulton Victoria Social Club in Wallasey on Friday, May 12, the so-called Welsh potting machine will compete in more than 10 frames of snooker, raising vital funds for a £15million appeal to help build Liverpool’s first specialist cancer hospital.

Snooker enthusiasts will have the opportunity of a photo with Mark. There will also be a raffle and charity auction on the night with proceeds going to charity.

Organisers Phil and Leanne Burton have held charity events in Wirral featuring big names in the sport like Jimmy White, Steve Davis, John Parrott and Dennis Taylor in the past, raising in excess of £1,500.

The husband and wife were compelled to fundraise for The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity after a friend was diagnosed with cancer.

Phil said: "A close friend of the family is currently undergoing chemotherapy at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre and we want to support the charity as it has helped her out so much.

"We have hosted previous events with Steve Davis, Jimmy White, Dennis Taylor and John Parrott, this event is going to be the biggest and best yet.

"Ticket sales have soared already and we expect to sell out for the event.

"This will be a great night for all involved and we hope to raise as much as we possibly can for charity.

"Our previous events have raised more than £500 each time but we are hoping to smash that target this time".

Phil has built up an impressive contacts book following the success of previous charity snooker nights that have followed a similar format, to facilitate the appearance of the twice world champion winning Welshman.

He said: "I regularly do these events for different charities each time so I have the contacts to put me in touch with the majority of the snooker players on tour"."

Elspeth Wilson, fundraising manager for The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity, said: "Thanks to Phil and all our wonderful supporters we will be able to make a huge difference to our patients and help transform cancer care across the region.

"By choosing to support The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity, Phil will be helping change lives for future generations.

"Don't miss out on what’s set to be a great evening and have fun.”
