FORMER Tranmere Rovers' defender Aaron Cresswell made his England debut last night during their international friendly against Spain.

The 26-year-old, now at West Ham United, came on as second half substitute in the game at Wembley, which ended 2-2 for Gareth Southgate's squad.

Cresswell came through Rovers' Academy system and progressed into the first team. He is one of many players to go on to have good careers at the top level.

In a statement on the club's website, Rovers manager Micky Mellon said: "We are always very proud of the youth here and this week, a product of the Tranmere youth system has got into the England team; Aaron Cresswell.

"That is inspirational to any player at Tranmere or thinking of coming here that if you work hard like him and keep improving that you can reach the highest level."

Shaun Garnett, who worked with Cresswell during his formative years at Prenton Park, said: "I'm delighted for Aaron to have made his international debut for England.

"He has always had great ability and has worked incredibly hard to make his way up to this level."
