Ten-man Tranmere ended their two-game losing run in the Vanarama National League with a goalless draw at at Bootham Crescent against York City.

James Norwood tackles the York defence in the gritty but goalless contest

The game swung in the Minstermen's favour after Hughes was sent off for a challenge on Richard Brodie in the opening minutes of the second half but Tranmere threatened again when James Norwood headed the ball against the crossbar.

Despite the disadvantage, it was Tranmere who threatened a goal more prominently as Darren Stephenson had a shot deflected narrowly wide before Norwood headed against the crossbar from the corner.

The pair had further chances which went off-target while York's best effort came from substitute Justin Johnson, who fired high over the crossbar in the final minute of stoppage time.

Rovers were backed by an impressive away crowd with 350 fans giving vocal support

Rovers manager Gary Brabin said: "The lads didn't get what they deserved.

"I thought it was an excellent first half performance and created good chances.

"We changed it a bit due to the circumstances (the sending-off) but I thought we sustained it and the lads were different class.

"The supporters were excellent too - fully supportive of the lads and they gave them the extra energy they needed."

The result left Rovers in fourth place in the league.

This Saturday they face mid-table Sutton Utd, who were promoted to the VNL after winning the National League South last season.

The game is scheduled to broadcast live on BT Sport 1 at 12.15pm.
