KITE buggy racers from across the country battled it out in a four nations championship on Hoylake beach.

Competitors from England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales took part in the bi-annual championship.

Taking place from last Wednesday to Sunday, the tournament was organised by Wirral Sand Yacht Club (WSYC) with support from the ParaKart Association.

Wirral Globe:

Mark Sherlock, chair of WSYC, told the Globe: "Most people made it out on the beach on Wednesday for a practice and by the end of the day the conditions were looking perfect for a few days of good racing.

Wirral Globe:

"Overnight rain unfortunately made for a very wet beach come Thursday morning.

"But it takes more than a bit of water to stop kite buggy racers."

Wirral Globe:

He continued: "Out came the small kites and by the end of the day four very competitive races had been run.

"Everyone was very wet but the competition between England and Scotland was very close.

"Friday saw excellent wind conditions and a dry beach which allowed for another four races with England managing to open up a small lead overall.

Wirral Globe:

"Saturday was once again a dry beach but with very light wind, so time for the big kites to make an appearance.

"Only one race was possible due to the light conditions but this was enough to make a nine-race championship and an outright win for England, closely followed by Scotland, Ireland and Wales.

"Competition for the individuals was just as competitive with plenty of excellent racing throughout the field.

"Ryan McGavin really is on fire at the moment, following his win in the PKA national series this year there is just no stopping him.

Wirral Globe:

"He took a clean sweep of the trophies with first place on each of the days racing, first place in the mens overall and first place with team England."

The final results in the men's competition were:

First: Ryan McGavin

Second Adrian Lavelle

Third Stuart Mackay

The final results in the Womens competition were:

First: Karen Cutbush

Second: Allison Summersfield

The event ended with a prize giving and Hog Roast at Hoylake Sailing Club.

Mark Sherlock said: "Even with the very changeable conditions this was a superb event and everyone that took part thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

"Roll on 2018."
