FOR the second week running, a bowler from North Wales took first prize at the Winter Flyers in Birkenhead Park as Broughton's Adam Penlington got the better of New Brighton Quarry Viking's Chris Barton in a very tight final.

The earlier results had produced a high-class quarter-final.

Penlington, in only his third visit to Birkenhead Park, was a little too good for Gladstone's Jason Dermott in the last eight and he then had a fairly relaxed win over Walton’s John Hignett in his semi-final.

Chris Barton had a great win over Hawksbury's Tommy Lowndes in the quarters before he just scraped through, 21-20, against last week’s winner Paul Roberts, who also plays for North Wales club Hawksbury.

The final was a great match throughout, but Barton was the loser in his second consecutive 21-20 game as Penlington scraped home for what was a well-deserved victory.

Results: Quarter-finals: C Barton (New Brighton Quarry Vikings) 21, T Lowndes (Hawksbury) 17; P Roberts (Hawksbury) 21, C Portis (Levers) 17; A Penlington (Broughton) 21, J Dermott (Gladstone) 14; J Hignett Snr (Walton) 21, T Cavanagh (Upton Victory Hall) 16.

Semi-finals: Barton 21, Roberts 20; Penlington 21, Hignett 8.

Final: Penlington 21, Barton 20.
