EVEN the promise of a cold, windy and very wet Sunday morning did not deter the hardy band of bowlers from shaking off the Christmas lethargy and turning up in Birkenhead Park for the resumption of the Winter Flyers.

Despite the best efforts of the rest of the players the final was between the two bowlers who had dominated the last session of the tournaments.

Mick Andrews and Jamie Fitzpatrick who both play for Tixall.

Though Andrews was just too good for West Kirby's Bill Atkinson in the quarter finals the Lever club’s Joe Edwards gave him a much harder game in the semis.

Fitzpatrick just pipped another Tixall player, Dave Gilmore, in his quarter final before beating Port Sunlight Village and Works' Nick Woodward to reach the final.

The final was tight but Andrews played very well in another very close game and was just able to prevent his team-mate from taking yet another win.

Results: Quarter-finals: J Fitzpatrick (Tixall) 21, D Gilmore (Tixall) 18; N Woodward (Port Sunlight (V&W) 21, R Lynch (Gladstone) 18; J Edwards (Levers) 21, E Dutton (New Brighton Quarry Vikings) 17; M Andrews (Tixall) 21, W Atkinson (West Kirby) 09.

Semi-finals: Fitzpatrick 21, Woodward 12; Andrews 21, Edwards 19.

Final: Andrews 21, Fitzpatrick 19.

In the Christmas Pensby Pairs Tournament, played on Monday, December 28, the pairing of John Hignett Jnr and Paul Roberts took the first prize beating John Finch and Jackie Butterworth in the final.
